Hosted by GrantGPS and the Irving Institute and geared toward junior faculty, post-docs, and graduate students, this free, three-week, online class will focus on the basic principles of good scientific style and composition. The course stresses writing with the reader in mind, and thus pays particular attention to impact, logic, and sharp technical style. Emphasis will be on practical applications to create clear text including a discussion of creating strong figures and tables. This class is recommended as a pre-requisite for our spring 2023 grant writing workshop.

Course Content

- Essential scientific writing principles with hands-on exercises (word choice and location; sentences structure and placement; paragraph organization and location; impact of writing)
- Creating clear figures and tables
- References and plagiarism

The class will meet on Thursday Dec 1, 8, and 15 from 2-4 pm via Zoom
